South Sudan Tames Uganda in Maiden International Friendly

JUBA, 11 July 2012 [Gurtong] - The football match dubbed as “the Independence game” was South Sudan’s first international friendly since becoming a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Kizito Luanda put the Cranes ahead in the sixth minute of first half but the Bright Stars equalised about 20 minutes later through Richard Justin from a spot kick.
Uganda Cranes however had to play without left back Joseph Okaya, who got a second yellow card minutes after the Bright Stars’ equaliser.
Julius Ogwang restored the Cranes lead with a second goal.
The Bright Stars with enormous support from the enthusiastic fans got an equaliser in the dying minutes of the first half through James Joseph’s header.
Second half produced no goal despite the Cranes’ dominance.
The Bright Star’s goalkeeper Juma Jenaro saved several shots to deny the Ugandan side victory and was awarded US $200 for his excellent performance.
Zoran Djordjevic, the Bright Stars’ coach however said a lot needs to be done to improve the team.
“They only need support from us to enable them compete well in international competitions”, said Djordjevic.
The South Sudanese Youth and Sports Minister Cirino Hiteng, told Gurtong that the match was to gauge how they can compete in international football games.

Malakal IDPs Desperately Need Relief Aid

The internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Malakal town desparately need relief assistnace.   March 2014 IDPs at a UNMISS clinic in Malakal. [File]  [Gurtong] - They have expressed disappountnent in the government for its failure to rescue them from the rebels' "atrocities" daily. The IDPs say people are being killed daily when found from their hideouts. IDPs in the United Nations' compound said their colleagues in churches and hiding in their houses risk being killed as the rebels still control Malakal town. Malakal fell into the hands of the Anti-government forces led by the country's ex-vice president Dr. Riek Machar, now turned rebel leader since mid-February after they overan the government forces there.
